Chartered Accountancy is a good career option if you are interested in subjects like taxation and accounting. The career path to becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) is challenging but very promising as well. There is a good demand for Chartered Accountancy professionals in India within private as well as public organisations. A qualified CA is hired to deal with the account details of an organisation.

Chartered Accountant is a designation that is given to a professional of accounting who has received certification from a statutory body that states he/she possesses the necessary qualifications to take care of the matters related to accounting and taxation of a business.

To become a certified Chartered Accountant, a candidate is required to complete three levels of training that are designed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

To appear for the CA Foundation Exam, a student should have cleared 12th / PUC /Any Equivalent

The CA Foundation Exam Consisting of 4 Papers:

Mode of Exam: Written Exam conducted offline at ICAI approved centres. Students need to attempt all 4 papers.

Exam Period: The CA Foundation Exam is conducted thrice a year. The January exam has a registration deadline of Sept 1st of pervious year. The June exam has a registration deadline of Febuary 1st, and the September exam has a registration deadline of May 1st.

Exam Pattern: Papers 1 & 2 (100% Descriptive) & Papers 3 & 4 (100% Objective) (Negative Marks)

Pass Criteria: Students need to score a minimum of 40% in each paper and an aggregate of 50% in all papers to pass.

The CA Foundation Structure consisting of 4 Papers:

Paper 1 – Accounting

Paper 2 – Business Laws

Paper 3 – Quantitative Aptitude

Paper 4 – Business Economics

To appear for the CA Intermdiate Exam, a student must meet one of the following criteria:

Cleared CA Foundation: The candidate should have cleared the CA Foundation.

Commerce Graduates/ Non Commerce Graduates: Candidates who are Commerce graduates have scored 55% and Non Commerce Graduate s have scored 60% are also eligible to register directly for the CA Intermediate Examination.

CMA Intermediate / CS Executive:  Candidates who have cleared CS Executive or CMA Intermediate are  also eligible to register directly for the CA Intermediate Examination.

The CA Intermediate Exam is divided into two Groups consisting of 6 Papers:

Mode of Exam: Written Exam conducted offline at ICAI approved centres. Students need to attempt at least one module.

Exam Period: The CA Intermediate Exam is conducted thrice a year. The January exam has a registration deadline of May 1st of previous year. The June exam has a registration deadline of Sept 1st of the previous year, and the September exam has a registration deadline of Jan 1st.

Exam Pattern: 70% Descriptive & 30% Objective

Pass Criteria: Students need to score a minimum of 40% in each paper and an aggregate of 50% in all papers in a module to pass.

The CA Intermdiate Structure is divided into two Group consisting of 6 Papers: Group 1 Paper 1- Advanced Accounting Paper 2 – Corporate Law and Other Laws Paper 3 – Taxation Group 2 Paper 4 – Cost & Management Accounting Paper 5 – Auditing and Ethics Paper 6 – Financial Management & Strategic Management

To appear for the CA Final Exam, a student must meet one of the following criteria:

Cleared CA Foundation & Intermediate: The candidate should have cleared the CA Foundation and CA Intermediate.

Articleship: Complete or be in the process of completing 2.

2years of articleship training under a practicing Chartered Accountant

AICITSS Course: Complete the Four Weeks of Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (AICITSS)

ICAI Registration: Have a valid registration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)

The CA Final Exam is divided into two Groups consisting of 6 Papers:

Mode of Exam: Written Exam conducted offline at ICAI approved centres. Students need to attempt at least one module.

Exam Period: The CA Final Exam is conducted thrice a year (jan/may/sep).

Exam Pattern: To clear CA Final exam, students must score a minimum of 40% per paper and 50% overall in a group.

Pass Criteria: Students need to score a minimum of 40% in each paper and an aggregate of 50% in all papers in a module to pass.

The CA Intermediate Structure is divided into two Group consisting of 6 Papers:

Group 1

Paper 1- Financial Reporting

Paper 2 – Advanced Financial Management

Paper 3 – Advanced Auditing, Assurance, and Professional Ethics

Group 2

Paper 4 – Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation

Paper 5 – Indirect Tax Laws

Paper 6 – Integrated Business Solutions
